Financial Freedom

Posted by

Hi, my name is David Anderson. Welcome to iSpyFi! I am starting a journey towards Financial Independence and thought that this blog documenting my financial travels could help you achieve the life you want.

I am 33 and have worked full-time since coming out of school. Since 2012 I have been a Prison Officer in Scotland; it’s a great job, but the retirement age is currently 67; that’s assuming I can even afford to retire when the time comes. But as a pensioner, I may get into a bit of trouble dealing with a gym-going, steroid-using, drug-fuelled 21-year-old prisoner. It’s not the life I want to be living as a pensioner; I know this, so I need to do something about it, not later, now.

I am not a writer, so this will be an exciting challenge.

I have 3 goals for iSpyFi.

  1. Keep me accountable for my goals.
  2. Track my progress.
  3. Help you.

If nothing else comes from the blog, if I can help even just one other person achieve the life of their dreams, this will all be worth it.

‘What is Financial Independence?’

Financial Independence, or FI as it is called, is achieving a place in your life where you do not need to work to live anymore. You make enough money from your investments to cover your outgoings month to month.

You are given the freedom to live life how you want to.

Start a business

Go to college/university

Charity work

Bring up a family

Travel

Sit on the couch and vegetate

It’s your life, and you would be in a position to choose what you do with your time. Rather than fitting into an organisation’s schedule, you make your schedule!

This sounds crazy, but people are doing it. So why can’t I? Why can’t you? There is no reason we can’t all break out of the traditional 9-5 work until you retire model that most people on this earth have accepted.

I am starting this journey with my wife, Kirstie, and I want to help other people achieve FI to CHOOSE the life they want to have! So, my plan for the blog is to document what I am doing, what I plan to do in the future. Why I am doing these things and what I  learn along the way.

But who is iSpyFi for?

Do you live month to month, paycheck to paycheck?

Do you have any savings at all?

Could you afford to cover an emergency cost at short notice?

Do you feel overwhelmed by your financial situation?

What would happen if you lost your job tomorrow?

How long could you last?

Do you hate that Monday morning feeling?

What about the Sunday night dread of a new work week starting in the morning?

Are you happy?

What is your plan for retirement?

How will you afford to live in your 80s when you aren’t working?

Are you in debt?

At least one or two of those questions will resonate with you. I know a few of them certainly apply to me. The true answer is that there is value here for everyone, even those on 6-figure salaries. Being on 6-figures with bad money habits is the same problem as someone on minimum wages with bad money habits.

‘What is my why?’

I am not a financial expert; I am just a regular guy who has a vision of what I want my life to be. I want to do things that make me and my family happy; I want to see my little boy grow up and not spend the next 30 years of his life working most days.

That’s why I want to achieve Financial Independence.

Think about what you want your life to be and the path you are currently on, where does it lead to, and is it what you want?

If you have a strong enough ‘WHY’, you can achieve anything you want to in life.

I hope that I have piqued your interest, and you will come back to follow my journey, learn from my successes and, more importantly, my mistakes, and kick start you on your path to Financial Independence.

Thanks for reading this first post of iSpyFi, and I look forward to seeing you again for the next one!
